Yesterday was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had in my life. I received my B.A. in African and African American Studies with a minor in Media Studies from THE University of Virginia. Along with over 6000 of my peers and thousands more family and friends. I also witnessed true greatness.
As Katie Couric delivered her keynote address to the class of 2012, she highlighted 2 friends of mine. These ladies have my utmost respect for their courage, diligence, and humility. One is a Chron’s Survivor and the other is currently battling cancer. Not only have these ladies excelled at the #1 Public University in the country, a “New Ivy”, but they have done so through great adversity. I was almost in tears as Katie spoke about them.
One of the things I have learned in college is that happiness is not determined by a wealth of material possessions. It is determined by the people that are in your life and your relationships with them. I have learned to not let petty things interfere with friendships and I have learned that every life has value. Claim your victory and be thankful that God has brought you this far!
I am proud of you, Lauren and Lynette! Thank you for being such an inspiration and being there to support each other. Lauren, you are one of the most selfless people I have ever met. You have so much to offer to the people around you! Lynette, I admire your strength and the bravery you have shown. From having the same peer advisor to walking the lawn- we officially made it!

It’s crazy that one of the most politically diverse continents on the planet is often portrayed as the most monolithic.
